Die Schöne Müllerin, composed by Franz Schubert in 1823, is a song cycle based on a collection of 20 poems by Wilhelm Müller. The piece will be performed by pianist Hui-Chuan Chen and tenor vocalist Andrew Sauvageau in the Earl and Darielle Linehan Concert Hall.
Pianist Hui-Chuan Chen leads a diverse career as a concert pianist, chamber musician, and educator. She has performed widely throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, and has appeared in major performance venues, including Carnegie Hall (Weill Recital Hall), The Kennedy Center Concert Hall, and The Supreme Court of the United States of America. She has featured at the Aspen Music Festival (Aspen, CO), The National Gallery of Art and The Phillips Collection in Washington DC, the Barge Music Festival in New York City, The Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy, the Walters Arts Museum and An Die Musik in Baltimore, MD, and the Heifetz International Music Festival in Staunton, VA.
Hui-Chuan has collaborated and toured with celebrated soloists, including Amit Peled, Marina Piccinini, Demarre McGill, Chee-Yun Kim, Jennifer Frautschi, and Robert McDuffie.. She returns regularly to The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University as a collaborator and is a long-term partner of the Washington International Competition, The National Symphony Orchestra Youth Fellowship Program, and the Arts Club of Washington. She served as music director for The Figaro Project in Baltimore, and First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Towson, MD.
She has earned awards from the Wonderlic Piano Competition in Baltimore, the Music Academy International in Siena, and the Kaohsiung City Competition, National Taiwan Normal University Piano Competition, and Kawai Piano Competition in Taiwan. She has also won awards and held prominent fellowships at The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University.
Since completing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at The Peabody Institute, Hui-Chuan is devoted to teaching and academia. She previously served as faculty for the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, Washington Conservatory of Music,and the Heifetz International Music Institute. She currently holds faculty and collaborative positions with the University of Maryland Baltimore County.
Praised for the shining color in his voice, the spark and nuance of his acting, and for his contained ferocity in concert, Andrew Sauvageau brings his energy to the stage, both in operatic and in concert settings. His solo engagements include performances with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in the UK premiere of Louis Andriessen’s La Commedia, Oliver Knussen’s Where the Wild Things Are with New York City Opera, Schönberg’s Serenade with the Birmingham New Music Group at the Library of Congress under Oliver Knussen, Berio’s Coro with the Lucerne Festival under Simon Rattle, Henry Partch’s Barstow with Peabody Camerata (Baltimore, MD), and La Commedia, H.K. Gruber’s Frankenstein!!, Armando Bayolo’s Sacred Cows, and Michael Gordon’s Van Gogh with Great Noise Ensemble (Washington, DC).
Andrew has also participated in various premieres by Michael Oberhauser with Silver Finch Arts Collective in Washington, DC, as well as premieres by Ruby Fulton and Nicholas Vines at the Tanglewood Music Festival, and the American premiere of Joanna Lee’s Lear TV with hexaCollective at the Baltimore ArtScape Festival. Recent concerts include Schubert’s Winterreise, Handel’s Messiah, and Rzweski’s Coming Together, and Bayolo’s Last Breaths.
